Soufriere Marine Management Association

The Soufrière Marine Management Association (SMMA) is a non-profit organization established in 1994 to oversee the sustainable use and conservation of marine resources along the southwestern coast of Saint Lucia. It serves as the Local Fisheries Management Authority, a designation conferred under the Fisheries Act. The SMMA’s jurisdiction spans approximately 11 kilometers of coastline, extending from Anse Jambon to Anse L’Ivrogne, encompassing both marine and coastal areas. The area is integrated into the broader Pitons Management Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, under the Physical Planning and Development Act of 2001 .The SMMA’s governance is characterized by a collaborative approach, involving various stakeholders, including government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and local communities. This inclusive management framework aims to balance ecological preservation with the livelihoods of those dependent on marine resources.
